  • Text: February 6, 1944, Bill Jr., a First Lieutenant, was in New York at Port [of] Embarkation. He went overseas on the Queen Mary. He was a Traffic Control Officer on the voyage. The ship docked in "Firth of Clyde" near Glasgow, and was met by a Scottish Band in "Kilties". He took a train from there to a small town south of Bristol, arriving about the 21st. After a week there he moved east to Wallingford, on the Thames, between Reading and Oxford, billited in and around the town, and watched the bombings of London from Wallingford. He spent two weeks at Weston-Supper Mer ? ? Bristol Channel near Bristol. He travelled to the coast of Devonshire often to participate or watch A.A. firing, or attend schools on it. He went to Bournmouth as Officer Courrier before the invasion picking up information for his Battalion.

Bill debarked from South Hampton for France in a Liberty Ship and arrived at Omaha Beachhead in Normandy in the evening. They laid off shore all night, unloading in the morning. They were bombed and strafed. There were hundreds of boats and the sky was bright with ack-ack fire.

He injured his knee, that had been injured three times before, during training and manuovers in the States. This happened near St. Mere Eglise while undergoing an artillery barage on the evening of the 18th. He was jumping a ditch hurriedly, to get to his foxhole. He laid in the foxhole all night in pain. The next morning he was taken to a hospital and in a few days he was evacuated to England on a Landing Craft Inf. He was in the Hospital in South Hampton for a few hours, and then he was moved to the 48th General Hospital near Winchester at Stockbridge, England. His leg was in a cast for several weeks, but he was in the Hospital for treatment, and on crutches, for over four months. He left the Hospital on October 25th.
