  • Text: "On June 8 most of the battalion left Wallingford for marshalling area at Winchester near the port of Southampton, located in southern England. On June 13 they boarded Liberty boats at the Southampton docks for the trip across the English Channel. The 552nd AAA AW Bn (Mbl) arrived at Utah Beach - "Sugar Red Beach" - on the coast of Normandy at 2100 hours on June 14 and began to move inland. They received their first dose of action soon after arrival when several KRAUT bombers dropped bombs in the water all around them. None of the men were hurt, but every one was almost scared to death."
