  • Text: TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN

    Know ye, that Jonathan J. Compton enlisted from Fulton County, Illinois, Sept. 21, 1861 and was mustered into the U. S. Service at Quincy, Illinois, Oct. 1, 1861 as a Private of Co. G, 50th regiment Ill. Vol. infantry under Capt. Geo. W. Brown and Col. Moses W. Bain to serve three years or during the war. The regiment was assigned to the 3rd brig. 2nd division 16th corps Army of the Tennessee, later to the div. Army of the Cumberland and participated in the following engagements: Ft. Henry, Feb. 6, 1862; - Ft. Donnellson, Tenn. Feb.13-15, '62; - Shiloh Tenn. April 6-7, 1832; - Corinth, Miss. Apr. 30 to May 30, 1862; - and October 5, 1862 Bear Creek; - Cherokee and Newcomers Farm, Ala. April 17, 1863; - Snake Creek Gap, Ga. May 8, 1864. - Wesaca, May 13; '64; - Lay's Ferry, Ga. May 15, 1864; —Contanaula River, Ga. May 17, 1864; - Allatoona, Ga. Oct.5, '64; —Savannah, Ca., Dec. 21, 1864; - Campaign of the Carolinas including Columbia, S. Car. Feb. 7, 1865; —Lynch's Creek, S. Car. Feb. 26, '65; - Fayetteville, N. Car., Mar. 13, 1865; —Bentonsville, B. C., Mar. 19-21, 1865. Was reviewed by General Sheridan at Raleigh, N. Car. and present at surrender of Gen. Johnston at Bennett House, April 26, 1865;. Also took part in the Grand Review at Washington, D.C. May 24, 1865. Said Jonathan J. Compton was detailed on special service with Col. Bain for a short time. At Rome, Ga. Sept. 27, 1864 he was honorably discharged on account of expiration of term of enlistment
