    To Whom It May Concern

The following is an article about Jonathan Jesse Compton's Civil War service. It has been handed down through the family. I don't know if he wrote it originally or dictated it to someone. It is copied exactly as I have It.

    To Whom It May Concern

Know ye, that Jonathan J. Compton enlisted from Fulton County, Illinois September 21, 1861 and was mustered into the U.S. Service at Quincy, Illinois Volunteer Infantry under Capt. George W. Brown, and Col. Moses W. Bain to serve three years or during the war.

  • Text: COMPTON, JONATHAN JESSEE AND JULIA ANN TAYLOR - F175

The basis of this article will be recollections of Ora Carney Cunningham (granddaughter of Jonathan and Julia) as she wrote in a publication entitled Comptonology and Personal Letters; an article Julia was interviewed for on 27 December, 1906 for the Canton Weekly Register in a column called "A Rambler's Notes"; and genealogical research.

Jonathan and Julia were born in New York, Jonathan in Tyrone Township, Steuben County (now Schuyler County) on 17 Janaury, 1818 and Julia in Auburn, Cayuga County on 7 July 1824. They were married in Auburn, Cauyga County, New York in January, 1839.

They came to Canton, Illinois in 1840. Family lore says Jonathan and Julia came to Illinois via canal and the rivers. On the canal Jonathan helped with the horses and Julia cooked to help pay for passage. They were traveling with their first born, Sarah Maria.

At the same time Julia's father and step-mother (Bennett Taylor and Nancy Bilay Taylor) also moved to Illinois. They traveled by horses and wagon, settling in Christian County.

Jonathan's parents, James Compton and Phebe Lamoreaux Compton, also moved from New York in 1840. They settled in Stoughton, Wisconsin.

Julia's twin brother Julius lived in Canton for awhile. He was a cooper.

While living in Canton, Jonathan's first occupation Was as a hatter, then later as a carpenter. Julia was a tailoress and made garments for the Dewey Drygoods Store.

Avon (at the time called Woodstock) became home for the Comptons in 1852. They moved there on a cold, snowy, blowing wintery day. This was a two day trip from Canton. The area was sparsely settled, wooded and had an abundance of deer, turkey and wolves.

Their first home was a small frame house. They cooked over an open fireplace, made their own soap, spun, wove, and made their own garments. This did not last long.

Later they purchased a lot in town (block ?1 , lot 3) and Jonathan built a two story, large house, in which they lived the rest of their lives. I understand it still stands today.

Jonathan was a Union Soldier in the Civil War. He enlisted for three years and was a member of Company G. 50th Regular Illinois Volunteers. (The regiment was referred to as the Blind Half Hundred.) While Jonathan was away Julia took care of sick and wounded soldiers on the home front.

After the war they ran a boarding house and Jonathan was a baker.

Apparently this was a close knit family because when Julia's brother Alonzo Taylor died (date unknown) in New York, Jonathan traveled there and brought Alonzo's widow, Samantha Grover Taylor, and her three children to Illinois. Samantha eventually married Daniel Goodsell. Their son Timothy Goodsell married Jonathan and Julia's daughter Julia Isabell.

Jonathan died on 21 May, 1887. Julia died on 13 May, 1913. They are buried in the Avon cemetery as are three of their children, William L. W. , Ida May, and Catherine S. Hodson.

To this union were born twelve children — Sarah Maria, (m. Addiston Clark Lindsey); William L. W.; Catherine S. (m. John W. Hodson); John Bennett (m. Emma Isabelle Frampton); De Witt Clinton; Sorelda Ann (m. James Randolph Cunningham); Phoebe Jane (m. David H. Humphrey); Ida May; Julia Isabell (m. Timothy Daniel (William?) Goodsell); Minnie Emaline (m. Charles David Hamill); and twins (died at birth, burial place unknown).

Julia Isabell Compton Goodsell and Timothy Daniel (William?) Goodsell were Our great grandparents.
