As crazy as it sounds, his wife wrote his birth year incorrectly in her bible, but she did this some 20 years after he was dead. His Civil War draft registration record and tombstone both prove he was born on November 28, 1844. The census records support this earlier date

Family Note
William Henry Forsyth was the son of Alpha L. Forsyth and Lucinda Ann Witt. He was born on 28 November 1845, on the family farm in Houston Township, Adams County, Illinois. He died on 11 May, 1871, at his farm in LaPrairie, Adams County, Illinois.
William is found in the 23 Nov 1850 Federal Illinois Census for Houston Township, Adams County, Illinois at age 5 and in the 1860 census at age 15 1/2. He married Martha on 29 November, 1865. Their marriage license was obtained on 23 November, 1865. Note that "Marriages of Adams County, IL Vol. II" lists the date as 29 December, 1865, but this date was obviously misread. Martha listed her marriage date as 30 November, 1865 in her own bible. William died of tuberculosis at the age of 26 years 5 months and 13 days. He is buried in the Forsyth Cemetery located on his father's farm in Hancock County, Illinois. The cemetery has 2 tombstones bearing his name. The first is the 8 foot tall marble spire, and it appears to have been intended that the four sides would contain the names of him, his wife, and his 2 living children; however, his name is the only one that appears there. On the base of the stone is inscribed "FORSYTH". The inscription on the north side of the stone reads:

WILLIAM H. FORSYTH.
Died
May 11, 1871.
AGED
26 y's. 5 m's. 13 d's.
How many hopes lie buried here.

The smaller stone located over what appears to be his grave, reads:

WILLIAM H. FORSYTH
DIED
May 11, 1871.
Aged
26 yrs. 5 mo. 13 ds.

Martha Lurinda McFarland was the daughter of William Madison McFarland and Eliza McFarland. She was born on 10 January, 1846, in Camp Point, Adams County, Illinois. She died on 20 March, 1920, at 83 Duffield Ave, Quincy, Illinois, and is buried in Linwood Cemetery, Galesburg, Illinois. She is not buried alongside her husband in the family's cemetery, probably because the land was no longer owned by her immediate relatives.
Martha is found in the 23 November, 1850 Federal Illinois Census for Houston Township, Adams County, Illinois at the age of 4 and as the daughter of William Madison McFarland and Eliza McFarland. There is some confusion over her middle name. It has been variously stated as Larinda be her grandson's wife in the "Forsythe-Humphrey Story" and "A Book of Memories", as Lucinda by "The History of Adams County, Illinois" in the entry for her bible (which I do not understand, since I have color copies of her bible's pages, and they are different than those found in this book. Since this bible is her father's could she have had a second bible?), and S. in "Marriages of Adams County, IL Vol. II" and the online index. In the bible pages that I have seen, the name is clearly written in cursive as 'Lurinda'. The cursive 'r' has been verified to match other writing in the bible, and has been shown to not match her cursive 'c'. Several relatives have viewed these pages, and all agree that the name is most definitely "Lurinda". Martha died at around 9:30 in the morning on 5 March, 1920 at the home of her son Joel Madison Forsyth at 83 Duffield Ave, in Quincy, Illinois. Funeral services were held at 2:30 Sunday afternoon at Grace Episcopal Church in Galesburg, Illinois, of which she was a member, with Rev. W. P. Foley officiating. "She was an invalid for the two years previous to her passing, and died from an attack of neuralgia of the heart. She never complained during her illness but was patient and thankful for all that was done for her. She was a kind christian woman and was a gentle and loving mother" - from her obituary. She is buried at Linwood Cemetery, Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois. Her grandson's wife states her death as 1919 so possibly the "Statewide Death Index 1916 - 1950" has the incorrect year.
She had lived with her husband on their farm in LaPrairie, Illinois. Her husband died when she was only 25 years old. She never remarried. After her husband died, she remained on the farm, and raised her children there. The 1880 Federal Illinois Census lists her in La Prairie, Adams County, Illinois at age 34. When her sons became adults, they moved off the farm to Galesburg, Illinois to find work. Martha then spent her winters with her eldest son William Marion in Galesburg. After William Marion died, she moved to Quincy, Illinois, and spent her winters with her son Joel, also in Galesburg. In later years she lived with her son Joel at 83 Duffield Avenue, in Quincy, Illinois.
She is listed in the 1910 Houston Township, Adams County, Illinois Plat Book as M.L. Forsythe, and owned about 10 acres in Sec. 16 Houston Township, Adams County, Illinois. This would have been part of her father's original homestead. She owned another appox. 10 acres a few miles to the west. The second section may well have been the Forsyth's original homestead. On 27 August, 1881, she petitioned the courts to become her son Alpha's legal guardian. The courts had appointed her father-in-law, Alpha Forsyth, the legal guardian until Alpha, the younger, was over the age of 14, at which time she was allowed to submit the petition. Granting of this petition meant that Alpha, the younger, was then entitled to his one-third portion of 80 acres of his deceased father's estate, which apparently his grandfather, Alpha, being the heretofore guardian, was in possesion of.

William and Martha had 3 children:

Alpha Layson "Alphie" (24 Jul 1866 - 30 Jul 1884)
Joel Madison "Joe" (1 Sep 1868 - 5/6 Jun 1939) m. 16 Jul 1891, Elizabeth Louise O'Hara (1s. Forrest James (18 Jan 1896 - 1 Oct 1955) m. abt 1928, Martha A. _____, div. abt 1933)
William Marion (5 Mar 1871 - 26 Nov 1904) m. Margaret Scully

Alphie was also buried in the Forsyth Cemetery. His stone reads:

Alpha L.
son of William H and Martha L
Born July 24, 1866
died July 30, 1884

Joel Madison married Elizabeth O'Hara (1874-1932) on July 16, 1891, and they had a son Forrest James Forsyth (18 January 1896-1 October 1955). All three are buried at St. Joseph's Cemetery, in Galesburg, Illinois. Forrest served in the Army during WWI.

In 1907, Martha is living at the corner of 4th and Oak streets in Quincy, Illinois, but is not found in the 1910 census for Ward 1 District 32.
