Family Note
(Elizabeth Haley) William Witt, may be the son of Elijah Witt and Jane Harbour. He was born in Henry County, Virginia, between 1758 and 1764. He died nearby on September 20, 1839, in Patrick County, Virginia. He married Elizabeth Haley, daughter of David Haley and Ester, in Henry County, Virginia in June of 1783. David Haley willed a slave to them upon his death.

Elizabeth was born in Halifax, Virginia about 1764 and died prior to July 12, 1819 when William Witt married Fanny Carter in Patrick County, Virginia.

Patrick County was formed from Henry County in 1790. No census records exist in Virginia for 1790 or 1800, however tax lists do. There are tax lists for Henry County in 1790, but not for Patrick County. The 1790 Henry County tax lists show 5 male Witt’s over the age of 21 taxed: Joel, John, William, Jesse, and David. In 1800, only 3 Witt’s were taxed in Henry County: John, Jesse, and David. Since William was no longer listed in that county, it is likely he was on land that was resectioned into Patrick County in 1790. In the 1810 tax list for Patrick County, William, William Jr., Daniel and Silas Witt are listed.

William and Elizabeth had at least 6 children all born in Henry or Patrick County, Virginia.:

William (abt 1784 - )
Silas (abt 1785/6 - )
Daniel G. (30 Sep 1787 - 2 May 1855) m. Martha Washington Brewer
Lucinda “Lucy” (1789 - ) m. Samuel B. Howell
Hester (abt 1792 - ) m. James Howell
Saunders (1795 - 10 Mar 1871) m. Viola Lavinia “Polly” Helms

Several other children have been listed on the internet (Elizabeth, Mary Elizabeth, Martha Patsy, Ruth) but few agree on who the parents are. It seems likely that at least one child was born before Daniel, and possibly two. Elizabeth (1783-1852) married ? Mize; Mary Elizabeth Witt (1786-1855) was born in Patrick County, and married John Hancock on February 9, 1804. Martha Patsy “Patsey” Witt married Isham Edwards on October 8, 1804 so was probably born before 1786, however she has been placed also as the daughter of Charles Witt and Lavinia Harbour. Ruth Witt was married to Caleb Griffith on August 24, 1828, so would have been born somewhere around 1808, and therefore much later than the other children.
