Note
Sgt. Ahijah Taylor was the son of Josiah Taylor and Thankful French. He was born on September 22, 1740 in Westport, Fairfield County, Connecticut. He died there on June 13, 1814. Ahijah was mentioned in the will of his father, Josiah Taylor of Westport, on February 17, 1777. Ahijah may have served in the French and Indian wars as a sergent and possibly later served in the Revolution. This idea comes form a note of unknown origin that states as follows:

Ahijah served in the French and Indian Wars and was given a "Warrant as Second Sergent in the 5th Company where I was Colonel" signed by Israel Putman then Lieut. Colonel under General Bradstreet. This commission was found among the papers of his son, Charles Wiley Taylor, and is now in the Norwalk Historical Society. ( Norwalk Historical Society) [http://books.google.com/books?id=M1M0AQAAMAAJ&pg=PA1655].

Israel Putman was promoted lieutenant-colonel in 1759. In 1764 he commanded the Connecticut regiment of 5 companies in Bradstreet's army during their Seige on Detroit. This list of soldiers in the 5 companies of his regiment ["Rolls of Connecticut Men in the French and Indian War, 1755-1762, Volume 2" http://books.google.com/books?id=tR8WAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA363 ] is conspicously missing the members of the 5th company. On page 324 [ http://books.google.com/books?id=tR8WAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA324 ] of the same book, there is a Corporal "Ahijah" Taylor serving from March 25, 1762 to November 30, 1762 in the northern campaign of the 2nd Company under Lieut. Col. James Smedley of Fairfield, in Col. Nathan Whiting's 2nd Regiment. It is not known if this is the same person.

In August 22, 1781, we was awarded, along with 62 others including his brothers Gamaliel and Levi proprietorship in the town of Wolcott, Lamoille County, Vermont. It is not clear why they were given propietorship in this undeveloped land. It also does not appear he ever set foot in the town, but his son Robert did. Of the original proprietors, almost none of them ever lived there. The town was not settled until 1789 by Seth Hubbell and Thomas Taylor, Ahijah's nephew, being the son of Gamaliel. In the 1790 census, Thomas Taylor, Seth Hubbell, Hezekiah Whitney, Robert Taylor and Luke Guyer were living in Wolcott. Gamaliel Taylor was living in the adjacent town of Hype Park about 10 miles away. Ahijah Taylor was still living in Norwalk.
