Deacon Henry Allen, John Bull and William Tilley all the subscribing witnesses to this will personally appeared and made Oath that they were present and did see Capt'ne Roger Clap signe & seale and heard him publish this Instrument to be his last Will & Testament and then when he so did he was of a disposing mind to the last of their knowledge & understanding

  • Text: Cap't Roger Claps will

    The time of my Death is knowne unto god, yet not knowne unto mee I Do therefore now in the time of my health make this my last will in manner following

    I Do commit my immortall Soul to the everliving God whose it is and my body after Death I leave unto my Relations to be decently buried in the Dust there to rest untill my Deare lord and Saviour, shall rayse it at his glorious coming unto Judgement

    As for that Estate which God hath graciously given me my just Debts paid and funeral expenses discharged. I Give unto my Deare and loving wife my house and land in Boston with all the privledges and appurtenanses belonging thereunto which land is bounded on the north with the land of mr Jonathan Balston on the south with the land of Edward Tucker on the east with the Sea : Also Six Acres of Upland and five Acres of Meadow be it more or less, lying in Dorchester Neck; bounded with the land of William Sumner on the South east and the land that was Neahmiah Claps, on the north west, and with the sea on the north : And also three Acres of meadow in Dorchester being on the northside of a Salt creeke at the lower end of Hopestill Claps lott comonly called Cornelius lott be it three Acres more or less; this house and lands to inioy dureing her natural life

    Also I give her to feather beds, with their furniture, a small Trunk, and forty pounds in money or such goods as she please to take out of my moveabels, when my Debts are paid and my wifes portion set out, and those small gifts hereafter expressed paid, my Will is the rest be divided equally to my children only Samuel my Eldest to have a double portion in all, except in that which my deare wife is to have for her life, I do further declare that whatsoever Samuel or any other of my children have had, or shall have, by my life time as part of their portion, shall be reckned as part of their portion; which receipts that I allow as part of their portions, you shall find in my little Farril booke. I do further declare That my sons shall have my land as is after expressed. My sone Samuel shall have all my land both Upland and meadow at Powaw point in Dorchester Neck and to small lotts in the little neck, and my lott comonly caled the Eaite Acre lott; and halfe my farme at Ponkapoage. Preserved having had land of me alredy at Northampton, as by my little Booke do appear he shall have a fifth part of my Farme at Pasasuck in Westfield : My son Hopestill shall have that part of ye home yt is beyond the fence, and all the meadow at the end of the home lott, and at ye tide mill, and at ye End of Cornelius lott as far as ye salt creek, but not over ye creek, and to small lotts in the little neck ye land at ye mouth of ye great creek and ye first and second division in the Cow walke and halfe my farme at Ponkapoage, and halfe the wood lott yt was Hases by ye Fresh Marsh all to be prized : Also my land that my sons have any of them, if not prised by me, and sett downe in my Forrile booke, it must be prized yt so those yt have had more than their portion, may pay to those that want to make yr Portions equall,

    I give to my son Desire my third Division of Woodland, and to and twenty Acres of land more or less lying on the north side of Nabonsett river, also that meadow on the south side of Nabonset which was William Meekies, be it three Acres more or less.

    I give out of my farme at Pasasuck in Westfield, Fifty Acres unto the Inhabitants of yt Towne towards the maintenance of an able Minister in yt towne with this Proviso, that they pay or cause to be paid two bushells of good wheat unto my dear wife in Boston yearly yearly [sic] dureing her naturall life, the residue of my land there not disposed of I leave to my Executors to dispose of to pay debts or to make my Childrens portions equall. For as I said before I say againe, my Will is that my children shall haue equall Portions as neer as may be except my son Samuel who shall have double excepting that which his mother have dureing her natural life, but that both house and land after my wife's decease,

    I give equally unto my sons, and my to daughters Elizabeth and Waite to be at their (my to daughters owne disposeing) the small Gifts I mentioned,

    I give unto my Grandchildren, that shall be then living, together with my Cousin Esther Bessesk and Constant Dewery Tenn shillings apiece. Further more my Will is when my children have received their Portions, That my sons and daughters shall pay their Mother yearly for her more comfortable living 20's apiece.

    Also I give my wife, what falls to her by her father Ford at Windsor or elsewhere

    I do hereby appoint and ordaine my deare wife and son Samuel to be my Executors and do institute and appoint my deare and loving friends Elder James Blake and Cozen Thomas Swift my Overseers to advise and assist my Execut's in the performing this my will; and do give my Overseers Ten shillings a piece. That this is my last will and testement I have sett to my hand & seale November 19th 1690.
