Note
William and Hannah Godsell of Queenstown (later Cobh), county Cork, Ireland lived and died across the bay from Aghada. They may have been of the same generation, or, if a generation earlier, they may be possible parents of William Godsil. Neither appear to have died with a will.

DIES FROM INJURIES
John Hickey Fails to Survive Terrible
Shock of Exposure
SUFFERS AGONIES TO THE LAST
Rallies Slightly Saturday Night at City
Hospital, But Has Relapse Sunday and
Dies in Afternoon.

John Hickey, a farmer living near Saluda, was struck by a C.B. & Q. train Friday and terribly injured.

When the train struck him he was hurled a distance of some twenty feet to the east of the track against a board and barb-wire fence. Here in a dazed condition he remained all night clawing the wire fence in his delirium with such a fierceness that his hands were torn into shreds. The bitter cold of the night also affected him, for his hands and feet to the wrist and ankles were frozen as stiff as a rock.

Unable to survive the shock of the terrible injuries he died about 4:15 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the city hospital.

Hickey came to Galesburg Friday afternoon and left for home on the passenger train to walk to his home about two miles east of here. No one saw the accident but everything goes to show that he was struck shortly afterwards by one of the many trains that pass that way during the night.

Found Next Morning.

He was found Saturday morning at 7:40 by Richard O'Hara, an employee of Mr. Reddington, a farmer living in that vicinity. He was lying about 40 rods north of the Saluda station on the east side of the track against Mr. Reddington's fence, some 40 steps north of Henry Burns' field crossing. He was lying on his left side and was yelling when found. He was in a semi-unconscious condition. An extra construction gang in charge of Will King came along then and soon afterwards Joe Osterberg's section gang. The injured man was taken to a shanty near there and word was sent to Galesburg. About 9:30 a special train in charge of Conductor William Rippetoe left for the scene of the accident. Dr. W.H. Maley had been hastily summoned and he was accompanied by Dr. Fed G. Hall, also of this city, medical examiner for the Burlington Relief department.

Suffering was Intense

Hickey was found lying in the shanty and suffering great pain. There was a large crowd of the neighbors and the relatives and friends present, besides the members of the section gang, who had brought him there. After the doctors had given him something to relieve his suffering , he was placed on a stretcher and taken to the car and brought to Galesburg, where he was taken to the Galesburg hospital, where Dr. Maley attended him and made a further examination of his wounds.

He was in frightful condition. His clothes were very badly torn, both his hands and feet were frozen stiff to the wrists and ankles: his hands were torn and scratched almost into fringe by his struggles in the barb-wire fence; his face also was scratched and cut., and he was terribly bruised about the knee and other places on the body. His left hip was dislocated, the pelvis being fractured.

Dr. Maley dressed his wounds and worked on him to draw the frost out of his extremities. He was made as comfortable as possible, but is necessarily in great pain. His wife and daughter, Maggie, are with him. A messenger was sent for them as soon as Mr. Hickey was found, and they arrived shortly afterwards and accompanied him here on the special train. Henry Burns and Michael Kennedy neighbors of the family, came up also on the same train.

Constant efforts were made to keep him alive, and various heart stimulants were injected into his body. On Saturday night he rested fairly well, although showing constantly that he was suffering terribly from the pain in his hands. Sunday morning his restlessness increased markedly, and all efforts to give him relief finally proved futile.

Change for Worse Appears.

About 2 o'clock in the afternoon a decided change for the worst made its appearance, and shortly afterwards Mr. Hickey sank into an unconsciousness from which he could not be aroused. In that condition his sufferings were relived, and he passed away. Gathered about his bedside at the hospital were his wife, his daughters, several relatives, Dr. Maley and the hospital attendants.

Further Facts of Accident.

Saturday there were reports on the street that the man had not been struck by a train, but had been held up and robbed. The facts do not, however, at all substantiate the story. He had money on his person when found, and although there was evidence of a struggle near the scene and the fence was covered with blood, there is not much doubt that the struggles of the wounded man were cause by the dazed condition of his mind. From half coherent sentences uttered after he was brought to this city, it appears that he was laboring under an hallucination all the time after the train struck him. He imagined that he was in the bushes near his home and was trying to fight his way out. When asked in regard to the accident he said, "Oh the bushes, the bushes" This accounts for the terrible manner in which his hands were mutilated on the barb-wire of the fence.

Inquiry by the coroner's jury into the death of John Hickey, which was finished Tuesday afternoon in the Circuit Court room, failed to determine from what ___he received the terrible bodily injuries which he was suffering when found on the CB&Q right-of-way near Saluda last Saturday morning. The verdict of the jury was simply that he died from his injuries and from the shock of freezing.

The deliberation of the jury did not occupy much time. The jurors decided that from the testimony given it was not satisfactorily shown that Mr. Hickey was struck by a railroad train, and they returned the following verdict: " Deceased came to his death from injuries received and from the shock of freezing on the right-of-way of the CB&Q Railway Company."

Sketch of Mr. Hickey

Mr. Hickey was an old resident of this county, having lived on his farm near Saluda for over twenty years. He came frequently to Galesburg, and was very well know her by many.

He was born in Limerick, Ireland, in 1841, and came to this country when about 13 years of age. He first came to Chicago, where he lived for a number of years, being married to Ellen Welch. Soon after this marriage he came to this county and purchased the farm on 120 acres near Saluda, where he lived until the time of his death. In his earlier years he was an active farmer, and he achieved much success in that work.

His wife died about twelve years ago, and he was afterwards married to miss Ellen Godsill of this city. The deceased was a member of St. Patrick's church of this city.

By his first wife there survived him six children - Mrs. C.G. (Mary) Morriety, Mrs N.F. Ratty, Mrs. W.J. Maxly, (NOTE: mothers obit states Morley) JR., and Ella and Margaret Hickey , all of Chicago, and James of Sacramento, Cal. By his second wife there survive John, Lawrence, Catherine, and Frances of this city.

The funeral services were held from St. Patrick's church Tuesday morning at 10:30 O'clock. The interment was in the new Catholic burying grounds.

The body of Mr. Hickey was taken form the rooms of Kimber & West Monday to the home of Edward Sculley, 888 Abingdon street.

Introduction

For several years I've been putting together a set of ring binder notebooks with photos and genealogy information on my wife's Godsil family. To go with that I have an Introduction that's very much a work in progress. Every time I get it out to look at or send a copy to someone I end up adding or changing something. Considering that my pile of notebooks is now about a foot and a half thick and still growing, and that I can't afford to publish this monster (would cost maybe $200 just to make a copy), I've decided that I'll distribute as much of it as I can anyway I can to make sure it doesn't disappear when I do. To that end, I'm going to try posting the Introduction as a document on Facebook.

It includes 15 attached sheets with photos, illustrations and copies of things like census records and naturalization records. At this point, I've not been able to add those attached sheets to this documents, only the list of attached sheets, so you'll have to click on the link below to see the attached sheets.

History of the Godsill/Godsil/Godsel/Godsell Family
Some Family Origins & Early History

There is an island just off the south coast of England called the Isle of Wight and on that island is a village called "God's Hill". The village gets its name because there is a church there at the top of a hill which has been a place of worship since about 1007. This is one of several possible place name sources for this surname including also the locations Gadshil in the County of Kent in England, Godshill in Hampshire County and Godsell Farm in the County of Wiltshire. There are early court records of people with similar names from the 13th and 14th centuries in England including one Hugh de Godeshull found in Somerset County in 1225 and also in Hampshire County in 1230 and also Richard Godeshulle in Sussex County in 1327.

There is also a possibility that the name was even earlier than this of Germanic origin. There is a collection of similar German type surnames under the heading of Godshalk, which also includes Godschall, Godschalk, Godshall, Godtschalk, Gotschall, Gottschalk and Gottshalk.

The Godsil name was probably introduced into Ireland sometime in the 17th century. A researcher of this family from England, John Godsill, believes that the earliest people in Ireland with this surname were Protestant immigrants from England, possibly Hereford, starting around 1600. The earliest he has evidence of were:

1) Daniel Godsell born 1623 in Moorestown, County Limerick
2) Amos Godsell born 1625 in Youghal, County Cork
3) Richard Godsell born sometime before 1655 in Dublin

He believes the first two are related and that Daniel Godsell may be the source of many people with that surname in Limerick and Cork up until about 1840, after which they tend to disappear. [That may have been a result of the potato famine in Ireland beginning in 1845. However, the William Godsill family didn’t start leaving for America until about 1864.] He says that this family owned property in both counties, including within the City of Cork where they owned a house on Godsils Lane, which appears on a 1750 map of the city. He says that it also appears in “Griffith’s Valuation of Ireland, 1848-1864”, which is a list of property owners or renters in Ireland during that period.

A copy of the 1750 map of Cork City was obtained by Christine Godsil Cooper, who visited County Cork during a trip to Ireland sometime in the 1980s. The map, included on Attached Sheet #12, shows what the city would have looked like in 1750 and in one area near the river a street named “Godsils Lane” can be seen. Attached Sheet #13 shows a blowup of that section of the 1750 map at the top of the page, and the bottom map is a blowup of the same section of current day Cork City (c.2007). The layout of the streets in that area is still very similar after 250 years, but “Godsils Lane” has apparently been replaced by a shopping center.

While the earliest documents tended to use the spelling Godsell, John Godsill says that much of the family in County Cork from about 1800 on used the spelling Godsil. However, it should be noted that the County Cork entries from Griffith’s Valuation also have the spellings Godsell and even Godsille. The latter were all found in the far south region of Cork in Ardagh Parish, which is where John Godsill says his part of the family is from. For this discussion of family history, it will be assumed that Godsil, Godsill, Godsel, Godsell, Godsile and Godsille are all legitimate and interchangeable versions of this surname. This assumption is supported considering the several spellings found just in the several documents obtained from Aghada Parish.

According to John Godsill, by the 1800s there were at least 3 distinct branches of the family in County Cork.

One was his Protestant branch in South Cork (mostly Ardagh Parish). There is some of that family still there but some also migrated to England. John says that his great-grandfather and his cousin changed the spelling of the name to Godsill when they left Ireland.

Another was a Catholic branch in North Cork with members still living in Cork City to this day, including a Vincent Godsil and his son Leonard. Vincent Godsil has written a book on County Cork.

A 3rd branch included the Catholic Godsills in Southeast Cork in Youghal, Midleton and Aghada. This is the most likely the branch that generated many Godsils in America including Illinois.

There are 15 entries in Griffith’s Valuation for County Cork beginning with “GODS” as follows:

Name Parish Townland
Godsil, Edmond Ardagh Knocknagappagh
Godsil, Matthew Sr. Ardagh Knocknagappagh
Godsille, Edmond Ardagh Carriganass
Godsille, Henry Ardagh Carriganass
Godsille, John Ardagh Carriganass
Godsille, Matthew Ardagh Carriganass
Godsille, Richard Ardagh Carriganass
Godsell, William Clonmel Queenstown (Ballyvoloon)
Godsil, Edward Ightermurraugh Ballyling
Godsil, Thomas Ightermurraugh Castlerichard
Godsell, Mary Kilmurry Coolduff
Godsell, Richard Kilmeen Boherboy (Gneeves)
Godsell, James Macroom Chapel Lane
Godsell, James Mogeely Rearour South
Godsell, Patrick Mogeely Coolcap

There are no people with that surname listed in Aghada Parish where William and Mary were married in 1840, and where all of their children are thought to have been born. According to Aghada parish priest Fr. Kelleher in 2007, William’s oldest son Michael Godsill born in 1840 is the earliest birth with that surname or similar that he could find in the parish records. That indicates that William Godsill came from some other parish in the area, probably fairly close to Aghada.

The closest entries geographically to Aghada Parish are:

1. Richard Godsell Clonmel Parish (Townland-Carriganass)

James Godsell Mogeely Parish (Townland-Rearour South)
Patrick Godsell Mogeely Parish (Townland-Coolcap)
Edward Godsil Ightermurraugh Parish (Townland-Ballyling)
Thomas Godsil Ightermurraugh Parish (Townland-Castlerichard)

Clonmel Parish is just across Cork Harbor, a short boat ride from Aghada, although by land around the harbor it would be more like 10 miles. Ightermurraugh Parish and Mogeely Parish are both about 10-15 miles to the Northeast of Aghada. [A confusing thing about the old parish maps however is that there are apparently two parishes of Mogeely, an Upper Mogeely and a Lower Mogeely. Upper Mogeely would be much further away to the Northeast, near Ardagh parish, than Lower Mogeely, and it’s not clear which one Griffith’s valuation refers to.] There are 7 entries from Ardagh Parish, two with the name Godsil. Ardagh Parish is a little further away than the others, at 20-25 miles northeast of Aghada, but might still be a possibility. The other parishes of Macroom, Kilmurry and Kilmeen are all in the west or southwest of County Cork, more on the order of 40-50 miles or more away, and it would be more difficult to get to Aghada from there. To assist with understanding the area around and near to Aghada, attached sheet shows this area of Eastern Cork with all of the old civil parish names. Ardagh Parish is not shown on the map but is just to the north of Killeagh and Youghal.

The closest entries by name to William Patrick & Mary Reily Godsill are:

Thomas Godsil from Castlerichard in Ightermurraugh Parish
Patrick Godsell from Coolcap in Mogeely Parish

Thomas Godsil in Ightermurraugh Parish was included because “family legend” says that William Godsill had a brother Thomas, who remained in County Cork when William and his family left for America in about 1864. Also, Ightermurraugh Parish is fairly near to Aghada, just 10-15 miles to the Northeast. Patrick Godsell in Mogeely Parish is included because Mogeely is likewise just 10-15 miles Northeast of Aghada (assuming that this person was living in Lower Mogeely), and because that was William Godsill’s middle name.

As mentioned previously, William Godsill was apparently not from Aghada Parish, but probably from somewhere fairly nearby. Mary Reily Godsill is believed to have been from Whitegate (village) in Aghada Parish, the daughter of Daniel & Margaret Hogan Reily. If one wonders how William Godsil and Mary Reily met and decided to marry, it would be most likely that William Godsill was living fairly close to Aghada Parish and had reason to visit there. For example, he could have been involved with a ship that made regular trips from Queenstown (Cobh) in Clonmel Parish across Cork Harbor to Aghada. He could also have been a tradesman of some kind who traveled throughout the area of eastern Cork County visiting parishes like Aghada, Mogeely, Cloyne, Ightermurraugh and Clonmel. Another scenario is that he was a farmer taking his crops to a nearby parish and town like Aghada, which had the connection by water with Queenstown (Cobh). Aghada was one town in that area that had regular visits by ships across Cork Harbor and might have been a center for commerce.

The evidence seems to point to William Godsill originating in one of the parishes within a few miles of Aghada and within easy travel in the 19th century, such as Clonmel, Cloyne, Ightermurraugh and Mogeely. People with this surname or similar were living in this area east of Cork City in the mid-1800s, including Thomas Godsil, a possible brother to William Godsill, who was found living in the village of Castlerichard in Ightermurraugh in the 1848-1864 Griffith’s Valuation. That was also the area where our English researcher John Godsill believes the Illinois branch of the family originated from. In addition, in current day County Cork, there are still people with this surname living in the area east of Cork City. As of November 2007, a friend of the family in County Cork (Melanie Walsh, a friend of Greg Godsil) was still trying to confirm that William Godsill came from somewhere in this area.

Another factor that should be considered is the connection between the Godsill family and the Scully family. While the Godsill family was still in County Cork, William & Mary Godsill’s daughter Margaret was apparently acquainted with a man named Edmund Scully, the son of John and Elizabeth Pomfret Scully. The Forsythe family believes that John Scully was living in Ballymacoda Parish in Cloyne Diocese in County Cork when their children including Edmund Scully were born. Ballymacoda is just to the east of Ightermurraugh Parish near the Irish Sea about 15 miles east of Aghada. A search of Griffith’s Valuation of 1848-1864 found the following Scully families living in eastern Cork in the same general area as the Godsill family:

Name Parish Townland

Scully, John Aghada Whitegate
Scully, Patrick Mogeely Mogeely-Upper
Scully, Daniel Mogeely Curraglass, West

The John Scully family living in the village of Whitegate, which is very close to Aghada in Aghada Parish, is the obvious choice for Edmund Scully’s parents. That could certainly explain how Edmund might have met Margaret Godsill, who was living in Aghada virtually next door in the 1860s before the Godsills left for America. There were only six cases found total where the Scully and Godsill names were found in the same Parish and the other three cases were much further away in either northeastern Cork or in western Cork.
The Godsill/Godsil Family From 1840 On

William Patrick Godsill was born in 1817 somewhere in County Cork, Ireland. He married Mary Reily, born 1815 in County Cork, on February 9, 1840 in Aghada Parish in Cloyne Diocese in County Cork. Mary Reily was most likely born in Whitegate in Aghada Parish to Daniel & Margaret Hogan Reily, while we believe from all of the evidence that William was most likely born in one of several nearby parishes in southeast Cork (east of Cork City). Their 7 children were born in Aghada Parish (between 1840 and 1850) before most of the family immigrated to America in 1864-1866.

Between the Aghada Parish records and the records at Mallow Heritage Center (covering 46 parishes in County Cork) there exist baptismal records for 6 of the 7 children. Maurice, thought to have been born in late 1845 or early 1846 and died about May 1866 during the voyage to America, is not included. Baptisms of the other 6 children with their witnesses were:

Michael Edward Godsel baptized 9/1/1840 with witnesses Patrick Reily & Catherine Walsh (may have been born in January 1840 based on 1900 census)
Ellen baptized 12/3/1842 with witnesses Patrick Curtin & Frances Day (thought to have died by 1850 and “replaced” by the other Ellen born 1850)
(Mary) Bridget baptized in 1845 with witnesses Timothy Cashman & Mary Hyde

Current Day Cork, Cork Harbor and Aghada

Cork County is part of the old Munster province of Ireland located in the southern part of the country and bordering on Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary and Waterford Counties. Cork City in the southeastern part of County Cork is the major city and is about 15 miles from the Atlantic Ocean on the northern end of Cork Harbor. Cloyne is a small town in the eastern part of County Cork some 15-20 miles east of Cork City and a few miles east of Cork Harbor. St. Colman’s Cathedral for the Catholic Diocese of Cloyne is actually located in the larger town of Cove (Cobh) on the north side of Cork Harbor some 7-8 miles east of Cork City. Aghada is a small fishing village population 2,500 located some 10-15 miles southeast of Cork City on the south shore of Cork Harbor.

Aghada has a pier where a ship from Cork and Cove (Cobh) docks once a week during the summer. The village is located on two levels, with Lower Aghada located on the harbor and Upper Aghada on top of a hill. Besides the main occupations in this area of fishing and farming, the area is known for platting or weaving Tuscan straw for exportation, also for platting a local type of grass known as “traneen”. Sandy soil from the bottom of Cork Harbor is excavated and used locally for manure. Several quarries in the area supply stone for building. Virtually all of the 2,331 acres in the parish are available for farming or as pasture for livestock.

Attached sheets #1 and #2 include maps and outlines of Ireland and specifically County Cork. The top diagram on Attached Sheet #1 shows the four old provinces of Ireland before it was split into Ireland and Northern Ireland. Cork was in the Province of Munster surrounded to the north by Kerry, Limerick, Clare, Tipperary and Waterford and on the south by the Atlantic Ocean. The inlet known as Cork Harbor, with Cork City at the northern end, is shown near the Atlantic Coast in the eastern half of County Cork. The bottom diagram shows a road map of southern Ireland with County Cork outlined with Cork City and Aghada marked. [Mallow, the location of the Mallow Heritage Center, is also shown to the north of Cork.] The top map on Attached Sheet #2 shows the area of Cork Harbor and Cork City with surrounding towns. The bottom map is a blowup of the area around Cork Harbor included in Cloyne Diocese, showing the villages of Cove (Cobh), Ballymore, Saleen, Cloyne, Rostellan, Whitegate and Aghada, which are part of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Cloyne.

Attached Sheets #3 through #6 show photographs of the village of Aghada and surrounding areas. The top photo on Attached Sheet #3 was taken from an Internet website for the village of Aghada. Melanie Slane Shamsuddin, great-great-great-granddaughter of William Patrick Godsill, took the remaining photos during a vacation trip with her family to Ireland in June 2006.

The two photos on Attached Sheet #3 show approximately the same area along the harbor in Lower Aghada. The top photo on Attached Sheet #4 shows the view from Upper Aghada across the harbor including the fishing fleet and pleasure craft anchored offshore of Lower Aghada. The bottom photo shows some of the houses in Upper Aghada.

The top photo on Attached Sheet #5 shows the ruins of the original Catholic Church in Aghada, very possibly the site of the marriage of William Godsil and Mary Reily in 1840. The bottom photo shows the Catholic cemetery in the foreground and the Catholic chapel in the background.

The photo at the top of Attached Sheet #6 shows some of the farmland in the Aghada area with a herd of the local cows in the foreground.
Immigration of the Godsill/Godsil Family

The information on exactly when the Godsill family immigrated to America is incomplete and somewhat contradictory. However, various sources within the family and from public records indicate the immigration probably took place within the two-year period of 1864-1866. No passenger list has yet been found with William and Mary Godsill arriving in America. However, a naturalization record for William Godsil (Attached Sheet #7) was found issued by the City Court of Brooklyn, New York dated October 18, 1865. Unfortunately, very little information was filled out on the form about the applicant’s birth date, occupation, etc other than that he was formerly of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. However, this indicates that at least part of the family arrived here in 1864 or 1865. Also, Edmund Scully, who followed Margaret Godsill to America in May 1866, was naturalized on October 3, 1866 in New York City (from the Forsythe Saga).

One indication for an 1864 arrival of some of the family was found in the obituary for Patrick Henry Godsil in 1914, which states that he immigrated to America in 1864. Since he was one of the two younger children (he was age 16-17 and Ellen was age 13-14), he more than likely came with his parents.

A Margaret Godsil was found arriving in NYC on April 17, 1865 on the ship Kangaroo from Liverpool and Queenstown (Attached Sheet #8). The record stated that she was age 21, born about 1844. That disagrees with our original birth date for Margaret of December 1847. However, her obituary in April 1907 indicates she was born in 1844-1845 (age 62) and the 1880 census shows her born 1844-1845. Finally, the 1900 census would seem to be the most reliable since it shows her actual birth date as December 1845. With that as a birth date, she would have been age 19 rather than 21 when she arrived in NYC, so this might not have been the right Margaret Godsil. However, the “real” Margaret Godsil would have arrived in America about this time or before, in the 1864-1866 time frame anyway, because she married Edmund Scully in Galesburg in May 1867. In fact, family tradition and the afore mentioned Forsythe Saga say that Edmund Scully followed Margaret to America because he wanted to marry her, and he arrived in NYC in May 1866. The “real” Margaret Godsil would therefore have arrived prior to May 1866. She might also have arrived earlier than her parents and the rest of the family. The story or “family legend” in the Scully-Forsythe family goes that when Margaret was a girl in Ireland, her parents didn't want her to marry Edmund, so they sent her to live with relatives in America. However, he followed her here to Galesburg in Illinois, where they where married and had many children. Who these Godsil relatives may have been no one knows, but that might explain why the Godsil family chose to settle in the Galesburg area in the first place.

A Michael “Godsell” age 24 (born about 1840-1841) was found arriving in NYC on May 16, 1865 on the ship Virginia from Liverpool and Queenstown (Attached Sheet #9). The 1880 and 1900 census for Galesburg disagree on when Michael was born, with the 1880 census showing an age of 33 (born about 1847) and the 1900 census showing a birth date of January 1840, which is probably the more reliable of the two. However, the birth/baptismal records from Aghada and the Mallow Heritage Center show Michael born/baptized in September 1840, so this person arriving in NYC in May 1865 is most likely the right person.

The following year on May 22, 1866 a Maurice Godsell age 20 and Edward (Edmund) Scully age 23 were found arriving in NYC on the ship Virginia together (Attached Sheets #10 and #11). [It should be noted however that while he was on the ship’s manifest leaving England/Ireland he probably did not actually arrive in New York City, having died on board.] They could have been traveling together since they were from the same area in Ireland, and the family “legend” says that Edmund Scully followed Margaret Godsill to America in order to marry her. The family “legend” also says that Maurice Godsill died on the voyage and was buried at sea, which would probably have been reported to the family later by Edmund Scully. No record has ever been found of Maurice Godsill in America, and we have no birth/baptismal record to show his actual birth date in Aghada, County Cork. The age of 20 was probably correct when the ship left England/Ireland, but might have been a little off when it arrived in NYC. However, it indicates he was probably born roughly between about early 1845 and May 1846. To refine that date a little further, his sister Mary Bridget was born Jan. 24, 1845. Unless they were twins, he was probably born between about October 1845 to May 1846.
The Godsills Travel to Illinois

Little information exists on the Godsill/Godsill family after they arrived in America in the 1864-1866 time period and eventually traveled to Knox County, Illinois. We know that William Patrick Godsill (and probably Mary) was still in New York City on October 18, 1865 when the Brooklyn, New York City Court records show him becoming a naturalized citizen. We also know that his children Margaret and Michael arrived in New York from Queenstown, Ireland by way of Liverpool, England in April and May 1865, along with Margaret’s eventual husband Edmund Scully in May 1866 (ships named Virginia, Kangaroo and Virginia respectively). We believe that William’s son Maurice was on the same ship as Edmund Scully and probably died during the voyage. Maurice was listed on the ship’s manifest but as far as we know never arrived. We also know that Margaret Godsill and Edmund Scully were married in Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois on May 20, 1867. Michael Godsill, who would have been about 26 years old in early 1866, might have traveled to Illinois separately from William and Mary; however, Patrick Henry, Margaret and Ellen were still teenagers (with Patrick the oldest at about 19 and Ellen the youngest at 16) and would most likely have traveled with their parents. The family probably all arrived in Galesburg from New York sometime prior to Margaret’s wedding in May 1867. Michael, Patrick and of course Margaret have been found in the 1870 census, although their parents William and Mary have not been.

One “family legend” about William Godsill traveling by train to Galesburg was passed down to William’s great-grandson William A Godsil and told to his children, some of whom remembered hearing it when the subject came up as recently as November 2007. With the background that William Godsill may not have spoken the English language very well and probably was not able to read at all, the story was that he went to use the bathroom on the train traveling to Illinois and was unable to figure out the mechanism for unlocking the door from the inside nor read the signs on the door. As a result he was supposed to have spent some time trapped inside the bathroom.
William Patrick Godsill’s Death and Burial

One mystery about William Patrick that still persists is to what age he survived and where he ended up being buried. The “family legend” has him dying in 1834 at the age of about 117, which seems highly unlikely. However, no death or burial record has ever been found, for him or his wife Mary. Neither have they been found in the 1870 census for Galesburg, by which time they should have arrived there. Mary Godsell was found living alone and designated a widow in the 1880 census for Galesburg living on Abingdon Street (probably somewhere between the current St. Patrick’s Catholic Church on Academy, and Main Street - no street numbers are given). The Mackey and Kelley families are living on either side of her, with her son Michael Godsill and his family living on the other side of the Kelley family.

The Illinois database for deaths “Pre-1916” has no record of anyone with a name even close to Godsell/Godsill/Godsil dying in Knox County prior to 1880 or prior to 1900. However, it should be noted that many deaths prior to 1877, when laws were enacted regarding keeping of vital statistics (deaths, births, marriages, etc), probably were not recorded. No record has ever been found of Mary Godsill (Godsell) in the 1900 census (there is no 1890 census), so she must have been deceased by then.

One possible version of the story of what happened to William Patrick Godsill is that William Godsill may have left his wife prior to 1880 and returned to Ireland. If that were the case, Mary Godsill might have designated in the census that she was widowed because her husband was not with her and she didn’t think that ‘Divorced’ applied, possibly because they were separated rather than officially divorced. In possible support of that theory is a record found indicating that William’s son Patrick Henry Godsil and Patrick’s daughter Mary were returning from a trip to County Cork in 1903, leaving Queenstown, County Cork on June 7 and arriving in New York City June 13 on the ship Etruria (see attached sheet #14). They might have returned to Ireland just to see where the family came from, or they might have returned there to visit Patrick’s father William. Queenstown is a town on Cork Harbor near Cork City which has also been known by the names Cobh or Cove, and is just across Cork Harbor from Aghada.

A more likely version of what might have happened to William Godsill is that he died prior to 1880 and was buried in St. Mary’s Cemetery in East Galesburg, but that the headstone disappeared into the adjacent Lake Rice. The author found two online burial listings for St. Mary’s, one of which contained two people by the name of Godsel, but not the right given names (Ellen and James, but not William and/or Mary). It should be noted that lots were sold in that cemetery only through 1891. Again, in possible support of this version of the story is the record showing that William Godsill’s son Patrick Henry and his daughter Mary made a trip to Ireland and back in 1903. If Mary Godsill was still alive in 1903 (at the age of about 88), she might have asked her son to return with her to Ireland so she could die there. However, it is more likely that Mary Reily Godsill died between 1880 and 1900 and was buried at St. Mary’s Cemetery with her husband.

One family heirloom that might provide some information about William and Mary Godsill would be the Godsil family bible. According to several members of the family, there was a family bible which is currently held by a Patrick Godsil, who lives in Mt. Vernon, Ohio, or by his son David who lives in Ostrander, Ohio. Patrick Godsil is the grandson of William’s son Patrick Henry. [Patrick Godsil attended a Godsil breakfast in the Galesburg area in about 2000 and was photographed with a number of local cousins.] The Godsil bible was probably started by Patrick Henry & Fannie Cratty Godsil after arriving in America. An attempt is ongoing as of November 2007 to determine if anything useful was recorded in the bible.
The Godsill/Godsil Family in Galesburg Illinois

Despite Mary Godsill spelling her name (or having the census taker spell her name) as Godsell in 1880, and the various spellings found in the records in County Cork, we think William & Mary were spelling the name as Godsill when they first arrived in Illinois. One confusion factor is that William Godsill’s naturalization papers used the Godsil spelling. [The problem was, many people in those days in/from Ireland could not read or write and their names were spelled in records in the way that they sounded to the record keeper.] William’s two sons - Michael Edward and Patrick Henry – remaining after Maurice apparently died on the voyage to America, then determined how the name would be spelled thereafter in Illinois. Michael appears to have been using the Godsill spelling, while his brother Patrick at some point in his life started using the Godsil spelling. One family “legend” is that there were so many Michaels & Patricks in the family that they were getting each other’s mails, so Patrick Henry dropped the 2nd ‘L’ to lessen the confusion. We know that Patrick was using the Godsil spelling in 1903 when he returned from his trip back to County Cork. In November 2007 there was still at least one direct descendent of Michael Godsill using the Godsill spelling – Edward “Eddie” Godsill of Peoria, Illinois and his three sons. The male descendents of Patrick Henry Godsil, by far the most numerous, continued to use the Godsil spelling.

In 1870 Michael Edward Godsill, the first born of William & Mary Godsill, is living in Galesburg, IL with his wife Bridget and daughter Mary. They are living next door to his brother Patrick Henry and his wife Mary Frances. In 1880 Michael Godsill was living on Abingdon Street in Galesburg and was employed as an assistant in a blacksmith shop, possibly the railroad blacksmith shop. He was apparently working with the railroad by 1892, when the following brief article appeared in the Galesburg Republic Register on Jan 9, 1892 in the Railroad news section: “Switchmen M. Godsil was unfortunate Wednesday. His hand was caught between the draw-bars and the fingers were smashed.” Michael Godsill died in 1909, he and Bridget Drummy/Drumanse Godsill having had 7 children, 4 daughters and 3 sons.

Patrick Henry Godsil and his wife Mary Frances appear in the 1870 census for Galesburg living next door to his older brother Michael and his family, and also next door to Patrick’s mother-in-law Mary Cratty (widowed a few years before) and her 3 sons. Patrick is listed as a laborer. [The Godsills are filed in the 1870 census under the name GATRELL, which is an excellent example of how far off the census entries can sometimes be.] The Patrick Henry & Mary Frances (Fannie) Godsil family appears in the 1880 census for Cedar Township, Knox County, Illinois with 6 of their eventual 8 children, 1 daughter and 7 sons. Patrick Godsil was a farmer in 1880 and the farm house they occupied (probably belonging originally to Fannie Cratty Godsil’s parents) stayed in the family for many years, and was occupied later by his son James C Godsil. As noted previously, Patrick Godsil traveled to Ireland and back with his daughter Mary in 1903, probably to visit his birthplace in Aghada, County Cork and possibly to visit his father William Patrick Godsil. Patrick Godsil died in 1914 from prostate cancer.

Next to youngest daughter of William and Mary Godsill, Margaret Godsill was married to Edmund Scully, who she probably knew from County Cork, in 1867 in Galesburg. Edmund Scully was born in 1842 in County Cork, oldest son of John and Elizabeth Scully. Edmund and Margaret Scully are found in the 1870 census for Galesburg with 3 of their eventual 10 children - daughters Mary, Ellen and Hannah. In 1880 they appear in the census for Galesburg with 4 children – Mary, Ellen, Anna (Hannah) and John. Edmund is listed as being a laborer. In 1900 the couple has 5 children living with them – Anna (Hanna), Edward, James, Katie (Katherine) and Daniel. Edmund is a blacksmith in the railroad shop. Margaret Godsill Scully died in April 1907 in Galesburg.

Youngest daughter of William and Mary Godsil, Ellen Godsill married John Hickey in Knox County in April 1880 according to the Illinois State marriage database. For some reason they do not appear in the 1880 census (taken in June-July) for Knox County but in 1900 the couple is living in Cedar Township, Knox County, Illinois and have 4 children – John age 19, Lawrence age 18, Catherine age 16 and Frances age 14. John Hickey is a farmer. Ellen Godsil Hickey died in Knox County, Illinois in 1906 at age 56, just a few years after her husband died.

The youngest daughter of William and Mary Godsill was Ellen born in 1842 and probably died before 1850. This is not the same Ellen Godsill born in 1850 who married John Hickey.

One remaining daughter of William and Mary Godsill was Mary Bridget born in 1845. According to the Forsythe Saga information, she may have married a man with the first or last name of Lawrence and died prior to 1906, but no other information exists.

Finally, as mentioned previously, there was a brother Maurice Godsil born between October 1845 and May 1846 who left Ireland with Edmund Scully on the ship Virginia in 1866 but apparently never reached America.
Sources of Information

It should be noted that at least six spellings of the family name were encountered from the research including Godsill, Godsil, Godsell, Godsel, Godsile and Godsille. The original spelling in Ireland was believed to be either Godsil or Godsill, from the way Edward and Patrick were spelling it once they arrived in America. Also, many of the people in the area of Cork City and Aghada spelled it Godsell, which might at some point have become Godsill, possibly during the immigration process. One possible reason for the variations in spelling was that people emigrating from Ireland tended to be illiterate and could only say the name to officials who asked for it. Those officials in turn wrote it down the way it sounded to them.

Some of the information on the Godsill/Godsil family came from the Roman Catholic Parish of Aghada, Cork County, Ireland and also the Cork County records from the Heritage Center at Mallow, the administrative capital for North Cork. A recent source of information was from John Godsill from England who posted some information on the Godsil website. The Godsil website is located at http://www.myfamily.com/isapi.dll?c=s&htx=m&siteid=oe-F&_lin=1
but a new user is required to be invited by a current user in order to get a login and gain access to the website.

Another very important source of information about the Godsill family was a genealogy project called “The Forsythe Saga”. The website is hosted by rumblefische.com, authored by Timothy J Forsythe and the main reference to William Godsill is located at http://www.rumblefische.com/ancestors/sources_S341.html, with many connected references. The Godsill connection to this family is through Edward Scully who emigrated from County Cork, Ireland about the same time as the William Godsill family and ended up marrying William's daughter Margaret in Galesburg in 1867. Their daughter Margaret Scully then married William Marion Forsyth.

Another source of information were immigration records at the National Archives & Records center and also available online through Ancestry.com (MyFamily.com Inc.). This includes the New York City passenger lists and also New York City court naturalization records.

Other sources of information included the U.S. census data starting in 1870, the Illinois marriage and death records database, and genealogy data collected from various family members.

William Godsil may have married 1st Betty Hanly and had

Maurice (bp. 26 Dec 1830 - abt May 1866) m. 22 Nov 1856, Mary Dolan

William Godsil married Mary Reily on February 9, 1840 in Aghada Parish, Cloyne Diocese, county Cork, Ireland; witnesses were James Reily and Mary Curtin. It seems likely that James Reily is a brother. Mary Curtin may be a sister of William. They had several children:

Michael Edward (Jan 1840, bp. 1 Sep 1840 - 1911) m. 30 Jan 1869, Bridget Drummy (1849 - 1918)
Margaret (bp. 3 Dec 1842 - 9 Apr 1907) m. 20 May 1867, Edmund Scully
Ellen (bp. 3 Dec 1842 - bef 3 Mar 1850)
Mary (bp. 24 Jan 1845 - ) m. Lawrence _____
Patrick Henry (bp. 14 Mar 1847 - 27 Oct 1914) m. 9 Sep 1869, Frances "Fannie" Cratty (13 May 1853 - 28 Dec 1919)
Ellen (3 Mar 1850, bp. 3 Mar 1850 - 11 Jul 1906) m. 8 Apr 1880, Galesburg, Knox, Illinois, John Hickey (1837 - 5 Jan 1902)

Patirck Henry Godsil's obituary states he came over in 1864. Michael arrived in New York from Ireland on the 'Virginia', on May 16, 1865. Maurice 'Godsell', seems to have come over with Edmund Scully on the same ship the following year, on May 22, 1866. Maurice's age is listed as 20 which would be correct, and he supposedly died about that time, and was buried at sea. I could find no record of him in the U.S. Margaret was here by May of 1867 when she married in Galesburg. A Margaret Godsil arrived on April 17, 1865 from Ireland on the Kangaroo. Ellen (Godsil) Hickey's obituary states that she along with her parents immigrated about 1873 ("about 33 years ago"), and that she was born in County Cork, Ireland. This obituary also lists as living in Galesburg, her sister Margaret Scully, and brothers Patrick and Michael. Since William and Mary Godsil are not found in the 1870 census, we can assume that they came at the later date. Tradition states that Margaret's parents sent her to live with relatives in America (Patrick) and that she came before Edmund Scully, which also means that her parents came after 1865.
