Commentary
Charles Cawley: 'In the Flodoard Annales she is listed as a sister of Hugues the Great, and thus a daughter of Robert I ["... Hugo dux cum nepotibus suis, Heriberti filiis, ... inter filios Heriberti comitis ..., Hugone principe avunculo ipsorum ... Nepotes Hugonis, Heribertus et Rotbertus, ..."]. Since the sons of Heribert were nepotes of Hugues, and Hugues was avunculus to the sons of Heribert, the clear interpretation is that Heribert was married to a sister of Hugues, and the names of Eudes, Hugues and Robert given to three of the sons of Heribert provide further confirmation. There is no clear documentation for her name. It is assumed her name was Liégarde because of the appearance of that name among her children and in the necrology of Saint-Quentin who would probably be connected somehow to the counts of Vermandois. There is no evidence for the name Hildebrandte, and the references to the name Adele, probably refer to the wife of Robert I.'

Charles Cawley: 'Her name is deduced as follows. The 21 May 907 donation of Rebais abbey to the church of Paris refers to "comitis Rotberti et Adele comitisse". Although this phrasing usually indicates husband and wife, Settipani suggests that the chronology of the life of King Robert's son Hugues (attested as Robert's son by his second wife Beatrix) favours his birth, and therefore his father's second marriage, well before 907, which would mean "Adele" could not have been Robert's wife. This reasoning appears based firstly on Hugues already being married in [914], and secondly on the probability of his having reached the age of majority when he was recognised as duke in 922. The 907 document is therefore explained as referring to Robert and his elder daughter. The issue, however, is not beyond doubt, especially if the document in question was misdated.'

Her mother is not documented. There are proposals to name her as the countess Adèle who appears on 21 May 907 in an act of the French king Charles the Simple, along with a count Robert who is almost certainly Robert I ["... venerandi comitis Rotberti, et Adelæ comitissæ ..."], but it is purely conjecture at this point. There are equally valid scenerios where this Adèle is the daughter of Robert I.
