Note
Joseph Lamoreux was a neighbor of Abraham Sneden in New York, so it only makes sense that Abigail was his daughter.
Family Note
Joseph Lamoreaux was the son of Pierre Lamoreaux and Phebe Wood. He was born on October 11, 1753 in Philipstown, Putnam County, New York. He died on November 11, 1840 in Warren, Bedford County, Pennsylvania as noted in "New York in Revolution as Colony and State" by James Roberts, 1898, p 165. On September 14, 1775, he signed a petition at Cornwall Precinct in Orange County, New York ("History of Orange County, New York).
He is listed as Joseph Lamoreux in the 4th Regiment militia, Orange County, New York and served in the Revolutionary War. According to the Revolutionary War Pension Records (#S.5715) in the National Archives, he was a private in Capt. Raymond's Company, and Col. Nicoll's New York Regiment. His pension records also state that he did not own land, and owned only the close on his back.
He married Abigail Sneden, the daughter of Abraham Sneden and Rachel Swartwout, on November 27, 1782 at Newburgh, Orange County, New York in the New Windsor Presbyterian Church. The "New York #2, 1740s-1880s Marriage Index" lists that date, and her spouse as Joseph Lamoree, but their marriage at the Presbyterian Church in New Windsor, with a note indicating of Smith Clove. It is not known when Abigail was born, but she died on September 15, 1844 in Broome County, New York. Their only known child is Phebe Lamoreaux (abt 1786 - 19 Jun 1885) m. James Compton.
They resided in Cornwall, New York, Chanango County, New York, Cayuga County, New York, Lodi, Seneca County, New York, Milo, Yates County, New York, and Warren, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania papers state that he lived some time separated from his wife. In the papers he stated that his wife wantonly threw out his papers.
Joseph and Abigail had been estranged for some time when in 1832 he filed for a pension as a revolutionary war soldier. When he died in 1840 he was living with his daughter Bathsheeba and her husband John Dickerson in Warren, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. He is counted there in the 1840 census.
