[tjf - Reuben Compton is found in the 1850, 1855 and 1860 census records in Bradford, Steuben County, which all state that he was born in New Jersey, so he could not be William Compton's son. His tombstone (http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nysteube/br/br2a.html) reads: Reuben Compton d. 20 Jul 1871 - Age 68y 3m 25d putting his birth in 1803. That Reuben was the probably the brother of Joshua J. Compton (7 Oct 1809-11 Feb 1878) who was buried in the same cemetery in Bradford, and whose census records also indicate that he was born in New Jesery. The census records also indicate that Reuben Compton married about 1832 and his first child was born in New York in 1833. In 1835 he had 1 son and 1 daughter]

[tjf - it is not known who Philip Compton was, but he may have been a brother of Reuben]
