[S1522] Richardson, Douglas, "Medieval Genealogy Newsgroup: Juliane Fitz Maurice, wife of Thomas de Clare" (25 Feb 2000) (http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/gen-medieval/2000-02/0951494078).
Note
Douglas Richardson: "the Clare wife of Robert de Quincy and Basile, who married Raymond Fitz William (otherwise de Carew) and Geoffrey Fitz Robert, are the same woman. The reasons for this conclusion is simple enough. Robert de Quincy was married to an unnnamed Clare girl who appears to have been been Earl Richard's daughter. He was given the Duffrey, co. Leinster in marriage and made Constable of Leinster. On Robert de Quincy's death in 1172, Raymond Fitz William immediately asked to marry the Earl's "sister," Basile, and be made Constable of Leinster. Initially the Earl rejected Raymond's request but later relented and agree to the match. In consequence of the marriage, Raymond was granted the Duffry, co. Leinster and the Constableship of Leinster. The obvious implication of this arrangement is that Raymond Fitz William married Robert de Quincy's widow and that the two women are the same person. ... As for whether Basile was daughter of Earl Richard or Earl Gilbert, chronology would seem to dictate that Basile was the daughter of Earl Richard. For what it is worth, I have examined one original source and it clearly states Robert de Quincy was Earl Richard's son-in-law. But I see DNB states that Robert de Quincy was married to Earl Richard's sister and it cites several sources which I have not seen. Whether daughter or sister of Earl Richard, I believe that Basile de Clare married both Robert de Quincy and Raymond Fitz William."

Douglas Richardson: "I have only seen one original source quoted by anyone and that original source states that Robert de Quincy was Earl Richard's son-in-law. Orpen seems to make it clear that both Robert and Raymond were granted the Constableship of Leinster and the property of the Duffrey, co. Leinster in marriage by Earl Richard. Since we know that Robert de Quincy's wife was widowed shortly before Raymond Fitz William requested the Earl's "sister"'s hand in marriage, I have to assume that the same woman is involved in both marriages. Under normal circumstances, Robert de Quincy's widow would have retained the Duffrey, particularly if it was considered her maritagium. And had she died, the Duffrey would have been held by her child's guardian until the child came of age. But it would not have been granted to her aunt's husband, which you suggest was the case. The Duffrey would presumably only go to Raymond Fitz William if he was married to Robert de Quincy's widow."
