"Fortescue, Earl Fortescue. - The common ancestor of this ancient and widely spreading family, appears to have settled at Wymondeston, or Wimpston, in the parish of Modbury, at a period not much subsequent to the Conquest. William Fortescue, the fourth in descent from the first possessor of Wimpston, married a co-heiress of Delaport"
