Commentary
There are no contemporary records that tell us anything about Ingelger ancestry. Some later sources attempt to define his parents and wife. A history of the counts of Anjou compiled in the twelfth century, Gesta Consulum Andegavorum names ["Ingelgerius"] as the son of ["Tertullus nobilem dux"]. It also names ["Ingelgerius…iuvenis filius Tortulfi"]. The Chronico Turonensi names his uncle by claiming ["Ingelgerius comes Andergavensis"] was ["nepos Hugonis Ducis Burgundiæ"]. The Historia Comitum Andegavorum records that Ingelgerius married ["Rursus Adelardus et Raymo ambo germani fratres, Turonensium et Andegavensium pontifices, neptem suam Aelindis"]. The Gesta Consulum Andegavorum records that Ingelger married ["Landonensis castri sive Gastinensis pagi consul nomine Gaufredus…filiam unicam…Adelam"].

Given that the contemporary evidence shows the gradual rise of Foulques, first without title, then as viscount, and finally as count, most scholars reject the legendary accounts found in these later sources.

Stewart Baldwin lists the other claims of his ancestry as probably mythical.
