Siegfried, Count of Luxembourg

Commentary
According to Charles Cawley, "The precise origin of Siegfried Count of Luxembourg is unknown but it is probable that he was related to Wigerich [III] Comte in the Ardennes."
According to Stewart Baldwin, he is probably the son of Richwin, but this is not known absolutely. He could have been the son of Wigerich III, Count of Ardennes.

Gerbert of Aurillac refers to "Godefridum, patruumque eius Sigifridum" in a letter dated 985. Other letters clarify that "Godefridum" was Godefroi, Count of Verdun, son of Gozelon, and grandson of Wigerich III, Count of Ardennes. 'Patruumque' is literally translated as a paternal uncle, but could be used to describe a lay brother (natural brother), a uterine brother (half-brother) or a cousin of his father Gozelon. An 11th century genealogy which traces the ancestry of Seigfried's daughter Empress Kunigund, lists Siegfried's mother as Kunigund as well. The wife of Wigerich III, Count of Ardennes was also named Kunigund.

Kunigund's first husband Wigerich probably died before 919 and since Seigfried's oldest son was born about 963, it is probable that Seigfried was born before 930 which makes it unlikely that he was a son of Wigerich. Another indication of this is his absence from a charter dated 943, issued by the Gozelon's widow, which is subscribed by the Gozelon's lay brothers.

Kunigund's second husband Richwin was murdered in 923 and therefore is equally unlikely to be the father of Seigfried.

Wigerich has only one known brother, Frederic of which little is known. Jackman suggests he is the father of Siegfried. Cawley places Siegfried as the son of an unknown brother. It is also possible that he was the son of a brother of Kunigund as this would make him a cousin of Gozelon.
