Commentary
Charles Cawley: "The identity of the father of Louis Comte de Mousson is not known with certainty. A series of charters suggest that he was Richwin Comte en Scarponnois. Jackman suggests that he was Otto Graf im Sundgau, but he does not appear to cite his authorities. He bases his speculation on inheritance of the castle of Montbéliard through this line, although the Chronicle of Alberic de Trois-Fontaines specifies that Montbéliard passed to the comital family of Bar from the wife of Louis's son Thierry. Poull suggests that Louis was the son of another Comte Louis, who fell ill returning from a pilgrimage to Mont-Saint-Michel between 1016 and 1025, and stopped at Sens where he became a monk at the abbey of Saint-Pierre to which he gave a pallium and his villa "Aricurt/Hericurt". One of the charters referred to above suggests that this older Comte Louis was the father of Comte Richwin. Poull also refers to Otto Graf im Sundgau as a possible ancestor, but the chronology is inconsistent with another generation inserted between Graf Otto and Louis de Mousson. m HILDEGARDE, daughter of ---. "Mathildis" (assumed to be Mathilde, daughter of Louis Comte de Mousson) refers to property "ad Herlischesheim" which "comitissa Hildegardis pro anima filii sui Lodovici" granted to the abbey of Sainte-Croix de Wolfenheim[7]. The same document names "Hugo attavus meus" as founder of the monastery. If it can be assumed that this refers to Hugo, father of Pope Leo IX, the mother of Louis Comte de Mousson was HILDEGARDE von Egisheim, daughter of HUGO Graf im Nordgau & his wife Heilwig von Dagsburg"

Cawley: "same person as…? LOUIS ([1015]-[29 Aug 1071/1076]). This co-identity is proposed by Europäische Stammtafeln. It is true that it presents no chronological difficulties, but it is not the only theory which has been proposed to explain the origin of Louis Comte de Mousson."

Weis places him as the son of this Richwin, Count of Scarpone.
