Commentary
According to Weis: "De Vajay, in Annales de Bourgogne vol. 32 (1960) 258-261, identifies Stephanie (Etiennette) as dau. Clemence de Foix & Albert de Longwy, Duke of Lorraine, d. 1048. Clemence is identified as dau. Bernard I Roger, Comte de Foix, d. 1035, & Garsinde de Bigorre; & Bernard as son of Roger I de Carcassonne & wife Adelaide. Moriarty, cit., supplies pedigree charts for these families, but does not agree with de Vajay as to her identity. Garnier (table XXVIII) shows her as dau. of Raymond II, Count of Barcelona. Prof. Kelley believes her parentage still unproven."

Charles Cawley: "Szabolcs de Vajay demonstrates that his early hypothesis concerning a Lotharingian origin of Etiennette is incorrect. According to Père Anselme, she was the daughter of Berenguer Ramón I "el Curvo" Conde de Barcelona, but there appears to be no contemporary documentation on which this is based. Settipani suggests that Etiennette may have been the daughter of Bernard [II] Comte de Bigorre & his first wife Clémence, based solely on onomastics, but the possible reason for a marriage between these two families has not been identified. A possible indication of her origin is provided by William of Tyre who specifies that Pope Calixtus II (Etiennette's son) was "consanguineus" of Emperor Heinrich V. The precise relationship has not yet been identified. It is possible that it is through Etiennette's family. Another clue may be provided by the Liber de Restauratione Sancti Martini Tornacensis which names "Hiolendem, filiam Gerardi Babinbergensis comitis" [Gerhard Graf von Wassenberg], when recording her marriage to Baudouin III Comte de Hainaut, and specifies that Yolande was "neptem Clementia Flandrensis comitissa". The relationship between Yolande and Ctss Clémence has not been established, but the obvious interpretation of the text is that Yolande's mother may have been the daughter of Guillaume II "le Grand" Comte de Bourgogne, and therefore the sister of Clémence. This is far from certain. Another possibility is that "neptem" should be interpreted more broadly, and that Graf Gerhard's wife was a relative of Etiennette, who was Clémence's mother."

Farmerie: "35 or so years ago, Szabolcs de Vajay wrote an article in which he evaluated all of the claimed ancestries assigned to her, and
rejected them all. He then discussed all of the evidence and concluded that she was daughter of Count Adelbert and his wife, 'Clemence of Foix'. His analysis was widely accepted, and you will fince 'Clemence' all over the internet. However, in the frequently cited Onomastique et Parente, (which just came off the presses in 2000), he wrote an article formally retracting this conclusion. The two critical pieces of evidence actually did not apply to the individuals they were thought to apply to, and thus the whole construct fell like a house of cards (this, among other things, means that Clemence of Foix never existed, and also affects the parentage of William VII of Aquitaine's wife). We are left with no basis for drawing a conclusion as to her parentage, other than that her son Raymond was apparently related to Henry of Burgundy, Count of Portugal, and that both his name, Raymond, and hers, Stephanie/Ettienette, points to a link to the Midi - the region stretching along the Med from Nice to Barcelona."
