Commentary

Cawley: "William Reedy, in the genealogical tables in the introduction to his collection of Basset charters, names "Alice de Gray" as the first wife of Alan Basset and mother of the sons shown below. He does not cite the primary source which confirms that this is correct. Alice has not been connected with the Grey families. The similarity between “Alice de Gray” and “Aline de Gai” (Alan’s supposed second wife) is striking. Unless another source emerges which confirms the separate identity of Alan’s two supposed wives, it appears likely that he had only a single wife. In any case, the chronology of Alan’s sons, in particular the likely dates of the marriages of Gilbert and Philip, suggests that Aline de Gai (first named in 1206, see below) was their mother"
