Note
The only primary source stating Adèle's parentage makes her a daughter of count Robert of Troyes. Two 11th/12th century Angevin genealogies support this claim. Some authors in the last century have claimed she was the daughter of Heribert II. This claim was made in order to simplify the sucession of the title of Troyes. When Étienne, count of Meaux and Troyes (son of count Heribert le Jeune), died between 1019 and 1023, power in Meaux and Troyes passed to Eudes II of Blois and Chartres, a grandson of Liégard, who was a daughter of Heribert II. Their objection is that if Adèle was the daughter of Robert, Count of Troyes, Eudes II of Blois and Chartres would not have been the "closest" blood heir of Étienne of Meaux and Troyes. However, such successions did not always go to the nearest blood heir. In addition, Robert was count of Troyes by right of his wife and not his father, so that it is difficult to label the acquisition of Troyes by Eudes as an "inheritance". Heribert also could not have been her father because this would have required Heribert to have had two daughters with the same name. Heribert's daughter Adèle, wife of Arnulf I of Flanders is well documented and for a host of reasons it is not feasible that she and Fulk III's mother were the same person. It is also likely that Heribert II was too old to have been her father.
