Gigatrees5 is a free and feature-rich family tree website generator. If you came here looking for VGedX (the GEDCOM validator), it is now included in the distribution.
Gigatrees5 is a Microsoft Windows console application (no UI) supporting most file encodings and character sets. It uses current web technologies to ensure family trees are compatable with all brands of web browsers and mobile devices. It imports all standard versions of GEDCOM 5 files including many application specific extensions. GEDCOM files can be exported from all modern genealogy editing applications including Ancestry.com. Gigatrees5 generates HTML pages for offline or online viewing. Advanced users may store their website pages into a database file that can be uploaded to any web hosting service along with several support files to help serve the pages. Gigatrees5 also supports both automatic and manual language translations.
Gigatrees5 was designed to promote the use of source documentation for genealogical claims and provides useful extensions for formalizing that documentation. Reliability assessments are automatically determined for every claim, based on the source documentation provided, making it easy to identify areas that need further research. Gigatrees5 supports application specific source citation templates and allows you to categorize your sources using the Genealogy Proof Standard. Other features include analyzing DNA matches, autogeneration of DNA ancestor (MRCA) trees, detecting vendor specific privacy flags, and performing living detection and birth year estimation. It automatically links embedded URLs and allows for embedding HTML into almost any data field. Gigatrees5 allows overriding paths to multimedia files, handles individual profile photos and source record images, calculates consanguinity between spouses, calculates ethnicity estimates, and has advanced date handling allowing it to recognize most unambiguous date formats, including built-in support for British monarch dates. Family trees include pages for each individual, source, and location in your database. Each individual also includes a pedigree chart, and when configured, a DNA relatives page, a DNA ancestor trees page, a census table, an ancestor list, descendants lists and an origin map for selected individuals. Individual profile pages include a fan chart and a complete timeline. In addition there is a population distribution heatmap that marks the location of every event in your database, a photo page that includes all individual profile photos and/or a photo gallery. The photo gallery can also be configured to be a standalone website. Gigatrees5 produces a detailed data validation report that detects many types of inconsistent and invalid claims by comparing event dates between related individuals. Inconsistencies are highlighted and linked from all event timelines. Lastly (or thereabouts), you can include an integrated blog with your family tree or replace your tree entirely with a standalone blog. And it does all of this without the need to modify the original GEDCOM file.
To get started all that is required is that you modify the user configuration file provided to set the path to your GEDCOM file, the output path for your HTML files and of course, your family tree's title. Beyond that, Gigatrees5 supports hundreds of additional configuration options that can be added for fine-tuning and tailoring your family tree. It is entirely up to you how many or few of these you use. The distribution includes complete documentation for configurating these options.
